Homework for 29/6/2012

Erm, so I just found out that Sa was posting the homework on her new blog here, but I would still be posting just in case you need it before Sa finishes her post.

I would be posting when I am in the info hub, in which I almost will be in every school day. I use the 'schedule' function so I would be posting at exactly 2 PM, except if for unexpected events.

As I said, I will not be responsible for any "No homework done" or "Too many homework done". If I missed out on any homework, please comment below and I will edit them in. Thank you!

And yes, I feel like using this font :D

History Stuff

I'm feeling lazy, so I am just copying and pasting...

Format
Section A: 4 time questions (4x1m)
                 2 short-answer questions (2m and 4m (2m give 1 paragraphs and 4m give 4
                 Paragraphs)
Section B: 2 source-based questions (5mx2)
Total: 20m
Duration: 45mins
Topics to revise
Unit 1 Lesson 5: counting time in History
Unit 1 Lesson 6: source-based questions
Unit 2 Lesson 1: concept of founding
Please read textbook chapter 2 about how Raffles founded Singapore and how he worked with Farquhar.
Source A tells us that the British founded Singapore in order to break the trade monopoly that the Dutch wanted to establish in the Archipelago and to safeguard British trading interests. This is seen in Source A that the Dutch wanted to “keep [the British] from trading with the islands of the Archipelago” and hence the motivation to found Singapore so that the British can “have a free and uninterrupted trade with the islands of the Archipelago”.
Source A also tells me that the British founded Singapore because they wanted to limit the Dutch territorial expansion. Source A states that Raffles is “concerned about the activities of the Dutch, who is not satisfied with Java and the Moluccas and have tried to take control of the whole of Borneo and Sumatra”, resulting in British reaction to plant the British flag in Singapore. This implies that the British wanted to limit the territorial expansion of the Dutch by occupying SIngapore.
Time - its relevance to our study of History ( Unit 1 Lesson 5 E-Journal)
  1. Sequence of events - documentation of the past is done correctly/ accurately (historical evidence/artifacts)
  2. Make the linkages between the past, present and future to see the patterns and make valid predictions.
Founding as a concept (Unit 2 lesson 1 E-journal)
  1. A founder needs to be just - conflicts will arise if there is a fairness/ justice
  2. Welfare of the state+people
  3. Set up a formal structure of laws and order
  4. Establish strong networks, politically and economically
  5. Provide a unique identity for the state.

So all this is the notes that I have taken down during today's History lesson.
:)))

Things to take note for History Common Test

The notes for English Informal Letter writing

Writing an Informal letter

The beginning

In the beginning when you write the address of the sender, no punctuations are allowed, no abbreviations like Blk  (Block), St (Street), No. (Number), Ave (Avenue), Dr (Drive), Cres (Crescent), S’pore/SG/S/Sg (Singapore), Rd (Road), Jln (Jalan), Cl (Close), etc are allowed. You will write the address on 3 to 4 lines, not on one single line. You have to first write the block, the street and followed by the postal code. Think of a valid postal code, like 333001 and not 000000 or something like that. The date should be the full form, like for example 2nd August 2012 and not like 02/08/12 or 2/8/12 or 2 Aug ’12 etc.

An example of an informal letter is as shown:

Block 183
Bukit Batok West Avenue 8
#05-113
Singapore 650183
2nd August 2012 (The date, day followed by month then year)

Dear Wendy(,) (Greeting/salutation. Note that that comma is not necessary, if you use comma here, do not use it at your complimentary close)

How have you been? (Short paragraph/ question asking after well-being)______________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(The Body. Note that the body should be longer than the starting paragraph)___________
____________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Yours sincerely(,)

Claudia (You can use a signature if you want to but make sure it is legible)

You can use the following complimentary close for your informal letter:-
  • Regards
  • Cheers
  • Yours sincerely (This can also be used for a formal letter, you you know the surname of the person)
  • Keep in touch
  • Lots of love
  • Hugs and kisses
  • Hugs
  • Cheerio
  • Best wishes
Do NOT use ‘Yours faithfully as it is used in formal letter in the case that you do not know the receiver's name/surname.

When writing an informal letter, you have to have an informal tone, use contractions, tool shifters and conversation markers. You will have to be tone-friendly, warm, inviting and persuasive if you are trying to persuade somebody.

Topic shifters are used to signal a slight change of topic in a smooth and natural way.

Some topic shifters are:-
  • Speaking of which
  • Talking about
  • Anyway
  • Incidentally
  • Before I forget
  • As I was saying before
  • That reminds me
  • While we’re on the subject
Some conversation markers are:-
  • You will not believe
  • Believe it or not
  • What’s more
  • As you know
There are many more, but I could not copy it down in time
